RESEARCH INTERESTS
My scholarly activity is evolving as a combination of original and applied research. Case study research which documents and analyzes design, planning and teaching methods and movements, and built landscape and their designers is a widely recognized need in the development of the profession's theoretical framework. Through such work as analyzing the practice of sustainable design by a nationally recognized designer, exploration of vernacular road forms, and analysis of the social and ecological evolution of park design, I am discovering new implications for theory and practice. The innovative application of theory and development of new methodologies through creative design and planning projects is another important scholarly contribution to be made. To this end, my work on a variety of projects, many of which integrate student service-learning, provides ongoing involvement in the "living laboratory" of physical design and planning.
TEACHING
UNDERGRADUATE COURSES TAUGHT AT UCONN:

Intermediate Design II

In this studio, the student's knowledge and skill in program analysis is developed and layered into their growing familiarity with the design process. Building on previous studios' concentrations on form creation and site analysis, the students are asked to approach a variety of design problems by analyzing and understanding how people use, enjoy and draw meaning from designed landscapes.

Landscape Design Drawing
This gateway studio course introduces and develops freehand drawing and graphic thinking skills. Through a series of basic drawing exercises the student works on "drawing from the right side of the brain" and capturing line, volume, structure and composition of everyday objects. This developing skill is then turned toward the conventions of design drawing as both a creative process and a communication tool.

Landscape Construction Materials & Methods
In this studio support course I teach the art and technology of design implementation. Beginning with site layout techniques, and progressing through a series of site detail typologies, the student develops an understanding of aesthetic and technical considerations in landscape construction.

Environmental Planning and Landscape Design
This course presents an overview of the environmental planning field as it relates to physical design and development of the landscape. The history of American environmentalism, contemporary causes of environmental problems, and innovative planning methodologies are explored through readings, lectures, discussion, student presentations and writing.
