Horticulture includes the arts and sciences related to the cultivation of fruits and vegetables, and the production and use of plants to enchance human environments. The major emphasis in the Horticulture program at UConn is on ornamental and landscape horticulture. The Horticulture major affords considerable flexibility in meeting degree requirements, however, so students with widely varying interests can be accomodated in the major. The Horticulture program enjoys strong links to the Turfgrass Science and Landscape Architecture programs. Students in the Horticulture program are encouraged to take courses in these fields, and have the opportunity to include a Minor in Turfgrass Management or Landscape Design in their plan of study.
Students majoring in Horticulture should obtain fundamental knowledge about plant growth and development, the ability to identify important horticultural plants, economics, pest management, crop production and cultivation.
